Language matters

Listening to the campaign speeches, having worked as an interpreter for the European Parliament, I listen closely to the language used. Which words are chosen for the message, how is the message framed? Which values are reflected in the choice of words and images? What if one starts to think about it? Friedman had a great article about Romney and the Republicans calling themselves pro-life. They pose as pro-life but at the same time don’t want stricter gun control. At the same time most support staunchly capital punishment, even the bombing of Iran by Israel. What about all this is pro-life?  What is pro-life ignoring climate change?

It is pro-life to have healthcare covering the reproductive rights of women without the nonsense, like in Arizona, that women have no coverage for  this, nor for screening  for breast cancer but that Viagra was part of the coverage. (By the way why is viagra capitalized? Is that a hidden message?)  Oh the writer’s mind reels, the linguist looks on. So, where ever you stand, search your heart, your soul and your mind and then speechless, without framing or words: vote!
