My first celebrity crush was David Cassidy.
I was in fourth grade and Friday nights were the best night of the week for t.v. No matter what I was doing, come 8:00pm ET, I would plop myself on the floor in front of our new color tv and tune in to Channel 7. The ABC line-up on Friday's was stellar: The Brady Bunch, Partridge Family, The Odd Couple and finally, Love American Style.
The Partridge Family really captured my attention. I wanted to be Laurie Partridge, but that wouldn't work because then Keith would be my brother and I couldn't date him.
My neighbor, Corinne had the Partridge Family Albums. Five of us (sisters and friends) would sit around her dining room table and take turns staring at the album cover while listening to Keith sing about how much he loved me. Sometimes when no one was looking I would steal a kiss.
One long summer day I came up with the brilliant idea to play the Partridge Family. Kim had the short blonde hair so she became Shirley. I was Lauri, of course. My sister wanted to be Chris because she loved the drums. The youngest sister was Tracy. Corinne was Keith.
We had a play drum and a miniature piano. We made broomsticks guitars and a tamborine. We loved banging on our instruments and singing along with the Partridge Family. We put on "concerts" for our families (much to my brothers' great amusement.)
The following summer I had grown older and no longer loved David the same way. I was listening to The Jackson 5 and Three Dog Night. I was hanging out with the public school kids and had developed a crush on Charles, who walked me home from school everyday.
I left David Cassidy and the Partridge Family behind, but I never forgot. Twenty years later I named my second son Keith.
