Our Generous Garden is a non-fiction, children's book about elementary school students who plan, plant and harvest a vegetable garden, donating more than 900 pounds of produce to their local food bank. Based on a successful seed-to-table garden project in Illinois, it is the only children's book to explore:

  • Nature and the great outdoors
  • Healthy eating habits
  • Where food comes from, and how to grow your own
  • Responsibility, respect and cooperation
  • Helping others
  • Community involvement
  • Math, science and the practical arts

Written from a child's perspective with pop-art images, the story follows students as they find the perfect garden spot, design their garden, grow seeds in the classroom, and plant their seedlings outdoors. The children work together to care for and harvest the garden. Garden recipes entice picky eaters to try some of the vegetables they've grown, and a private eye activity encourages teachers, parents and children to use gardens as outdoor classrooms.

This is the first book of six in a gardening series for children K-4 and complements classroom curriculum, addressing multiple disciplines and modes of learning. It gives students hands-on experience in the creative arts, science and math, and in the practice of responsibility and respect.

Educators, parents and community leaders agree: Kids want to get their hands dirty after reading Our Generous Garden.
