I am truly loving the summer season, now that it is here in full force. Yes, some days have been a bit hotter than others, but I would much rather complain about the heat than the cold any day!!
During the month of June, I've been working on a new project that started out to be writing content for a customer's company site. However, this quickly grew into a web site renovation, which then turned into a complete site rebuild from the ground up. Most of you know that I designed and built my own site, but to do this for a customer was a little more intimidating. While I have a strong understanding of one programming language and most of its applications, which I taught myself over the years -- the other two languages that I incorporated into my customer's site are quite foreign to me. Fortunately, even though I don't understand the other two as well, I knew where to find the programming codes that I needed for the site and I knew how to apply those codes to achieve my goals.
While working on my project, I spoke with three different technicians (computer gurus) who all said that I could not do what I wanted to do by writing strict programming code. Each said that I would have to get some kind of web site building software to help me, because I didn't have the experience -- and two of them said that strict code writing alone could not achieve some of the formats that I was seeking. Those of you who know me personally, know that I would not respond well to anyone telling me that I could not do something. Consequently, I became even more determined to prove the gurus wrong -- and guess what -- I DID!! Don't get me wrong, it was challenging and I am sure that an expert programmer could have done the same thing that I did in half the time. However, it didn't take me that long at all, I learned a lot in the process, and my customer is beyond pleased with the final results -- a professional, cohesive, and polished 13-page web site. Don't worry -- I'm not giving up my writing career to pursue computer programming by any means, but it is nice to know that I can utilize some of that knowledge to enhance a customer's site if needed, while writing their content.
I have to say that I'm proud of myself, not only for the finished product, but also for not allowing my lack of knowledge in some areas to discourage me from trying. I think that we miss out on many opportunities in life, because our fear of failure defeats us and paralyzes our sense of adventure. How will we know unless we try? Sometimes, we simply need to do a little research, before deciding that a goal is unachievable. So, the next time that you encounter a seemingly impossible task, don't give up before you get started. Instead, kick your negative thoughts to the curb, do the research and work necessary to reach your objective, and try believing in yourself. I think you will be amazed, not only with the results, but also with how you feel about yourself.
Finally, July 4th is only a couple of days away. Enjoy your cook-outs, beach outings, and fireworks -- but also, remember to be safe!
As always, thank you everyone for your love, friendship, and unyielding support during the past six years. I look forward to more years with all of you! Talk to you next month.
