HI EVERYONE!

Snow, snow, and more snow to come ... clearly, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow.

In the meantime, love is in the air with Valentine's Day just around the corner. I bet that some of you didn't know that the history of Valentine's Day goes all the way back to 498 A.D., while changing and evolving over the years through France, England and eventually America, and becoming more popular and celebrated in the 1700's as a holiday of romance. During those days, people exchanged hand-written Valentines, love notes, and various tokens of affection. Then, in the mid 1800's, mass production of Valentine's began in America.

Of course today, some view Valentine's Day as nothing more than a commercial holiday designed to generate more revenue for greeting card companies, flower shops, jewelry stores, and restaurants. While that may be true in the retail industry ... why can't we take control of this unique holiday? Just like Christmas, even though we should love and respect people all year long ... having a special day to commemorate love is a good thing. It is a way to step out of our daily routine to celebrate how much we care about each other, whether it is romantic love, friendship love, or love for a family member. Only we can define the best way to celebrate the love we feel for others.

Red roses have always been known as the flower of love, but we all know how expensive red roses can be during Valentines. Whenever my husband has given flowers to me, he has always chosen white roses, because those are my favorite. Some like lilacs, while others prefer irises or orchids. My point is that red roses don't have to be your symbol of love, because it is up to you to choose what your symbols of love are. The idea is to celebrate and have fun with it. Dana and I really enjoy Valentine's Day every year. We don't buy expensive gifts for each other now. We give each other fun gifts that have more meaning. We give each other more than one greeting card, our own small tokens of love, and we enjoy a few treats like candy, heart-shaped homemade brownies, and heart shaped pancakes.

I don't think that people celebrate love enough in our crazy-busy lives. So, why not have a fun day that isn't about the retail industry, but more about each other? Of course, if you have the money to spend and you really want to go to the Capital Grille for dinner, buy red roses, Godiva chocolates, and diamond jewelry ... you can, but don't let retailers dictate what love means to you or the people in your heart. You decide and enjoy it.

I'd like to share one of my poems from my book, Wings of an Angel Poetry Collection. This poem is all about love ... the kind of love that stops time, that defies gravity, and exists beyond any obstacle. When I wrote this poem, I imagined the perfect moment in time that captures love like no other. I hope that it resonates with you and I hope that you enjoy it! Happy Valentine's Day!!!

THE FIFTH SEASON

A timeless moment captured between then and now
reveals the sacred portal of time
that beholds the beauty of love’s radiance.

Two spirits whisper vows of ever after
while sharing the innocence of yesteryear.

The power of misgiving
cascades into a whirlpool of darkness
protecting them from the bounds of disbelief.

Trust carries their dreams
into the reality of their heart’s thirst,
casting them into a season of abandon.

Their bond frees them from the cages of despair,
leading them through the chambers of hope.

The fifth season lives
within the walls of serenity,
beyond the doors of unyielding love
and among the fields of faith.

It’s the bridge
through time’s unbroken promises,
the cycle of infinite emotions
and the age of endless surrender,

and while the vestige of its existence
will always remain locked
within the hearts of those who have loved,
the fifth season will never be forgotten.

Finally, I was bit by the cold bug at the start of the new year and I remained sick for most of January. It was a long month of painful coughing. It seems that many have suffered or are still suffering with the same type of cold. I'm so glad to be feeling better and I hope that any of you who are under the weather right now, will be feeling better soon!

As always, thank you everyone for your love, friendship, and unyielding support! See you next month.
