I've always found it appropriate that the New Year's follows straight after Christmas. It's an opportunity after centering on hope and renewel of the human spirit to make that resolve to live better the following year.
As we move forward with hope into the New Year, I think the video you can find here has the right idea in which it expresses better than I can with this post. Let's not look behind us as Lot's wife, but forward to this time period we haven't screwed up on yet.
I recognize that more concrete and specific goals tend to be more effective even though I'm not always the best at doing this. I have more private goals, but for my role as an author, here's my resolutions for 2011:
- Complete revisions of chapters 1 and 2 of Monster Inside Him by June, so they can be ready to be submitted to the Advance Submission Critique for the LA Writer's Conference that takes place in September. I plan to use the same person I did this last conference who is a freelance editor.
- Complete the rest of the first draft of Monster Inside Him by June.
- Get revised manuscript of Monster Inside Him ready by the end of the year to be submitted to the freelance editor that I mentioned above as I hire him for his full service. I want things to be as polished as possible before handing it over to him for the full service, because it would be more cost effective for me and less painful for him that way. He'd rather make something good better over making garbage not suck. It's just better use of both of our times.
- Then I have other stuff that's not quite so concrete, but would be good. I hope to write blog posts here and on my new website on a more regular basis. Also, I want to see what I can do about growing an audience. I think a book will tend to do better if there's buzz prior to it's release.
