As a Christian - one who tries to live according to the teachings of Jesus, one would think I would be excited by the upcoming celebration that is Christmas. And I am. But I'm not.
I look forward to being with family, I am enjoying following an advent reading plan to hone my thoughts in on the miracle of the incarnation. And I am certainly looking forward to relaxing over the break, however... The consumerism and greed that has for quite some time clouded the true value of the Christmas season is just getting beyond a joke.
Each year in America, approximatley US$450Billion is spent on Christmas. On presents and food and decorations etc.... FOUR HUNDRED AND FIFTY BILLION YOU ES DOLLARS!! It infuriates me especially when it would only cost 10 Billion dollars to provide clean fresh drinking water to the 3rd world.
O how selfish
Greedy and perverse
Each year spending more digging holes deeper into the purse
While people thirst and starve and die
We feast and consume
We buy buy buy
But what if
We did a little less
Bought less gifts
Gave more presence
Worshipped more fully and loved the world with our money
What if when we are asked what we want for Christmas we answer with...
'That the hungry would be fed, the thirsty would drink, the naked would be clothed and the homless given shelter'
Christmas is not about ME, its about the GOD OF HEAVEN who created all things, who threw the stars into space and who rides on the wings of the wind with the storm clouds as dust on his feet - its about this GOD, becoming human, humbling himself for the sake of others.
This Christmas, may we immitate this God, and humble ourselves, and our wallets, for the sake of others.
Who cares if you dont get that new shirt or that new golf club.... people are dying, while we just get fatter.
