My connection to Smith Farm began in 2000 when I was seeking a way to use my creativity to honor the memory of my grandmother Frederica Stanley Roberts Leeke who died of breast cancer in 1996. My work as an artist-in-residence began in 2003 at Howard University Hospital. This experience has been transformative. It is probably some of the deepest work I have ever done in service to others. Over the past five years, I have grown spiritually, emotionally, and creatively while working as a Smith Farm artist. Many patients impacted my creative work. Several patients helped me incorporate poetry, prayers, affirmations, and quotes into mixed media wire sculptures and collages. One patient who was a master artist with a MFA from Howard University taught me how to paint and trust my gifts as a painter. I worked with him for almost two years on various projects that felt like master workshops. The work was intense, emotional, and so healing. His efforts are the main reason I was able to create artwork for my debut novel, Love's Troubadours - Karma: Book One (http://www.lovestroubadours.com/). Another patient convinced me to incorporate my Reiki healing touch and yoga training into my creative work. I continue to grow each week that I work with patients and their families. What a blessing!
