Warming, today.
I had a terrible day. Nothing to talk about. But I can't have too many like this.
Part of the afternoon, I read and critiqued the viral and media touted essay about how "Women Can't Have It All." I thought the piece made some excellent points but was rather badly over-written. The author was a high official in the Obama Administration, on leave from a prestigious Eastern University. She was lamenting that she could not spend crucial time with her teenage son. I would not disparage her plight, but tens of millions of single mothers, women trapped in unhappy mariages, women working at minimum wage or at 70% of what a man is making in a comparable job must find her lament a bit laughable.
The fact is that anyone who goes into teaching (or the political realm) must face the fact that they will be away from their children quite often, no matter how accommodating the spouse. And the children may very well harbor resentment for that fact for years, if not decades.
There is an irony here that I shall not go into.
