We had a fine if uneventful day. I was increasingly tired and unproductive as the day went on.
Son Jason made not one but two visits to us during the day.
In the first visit, he had me look up an artist he once knew, and we looked at some of her work reproduced online.
The high point of the afternoon came when our new AT&T U-Verse service arrived by way of Email with the promise of unlimited media. I'm not certain of the conditions, even now, but I did find over a thousand movies at our disposal, ranking from terrible dreck to classics. One which falls in between took my attention, THE NORTH STAR, a film about the effects of the Nazi Invasion of Russia on peasant families of Southern Russia, in 1941. Along with MISSION TO MOSCOW (1943), this picture was used as evidence to fuel the McCarthyite Communist Witch Hunt in Hollywood during the 1950's. The picture was later bought up, its first third slashed, and re-released as ARMORED ATTACK, with a Cold War narration and a context of the ill-fated 1956 Hungarian Revolution. I had not seen the entire film since I saw it in the theater, the year it was made.
Of course, my feelings at the time were much different than they are today, but granting the strong propaganda themes apparent now, I thought the picture was quite moving. THE NORTH STAR was, after all, written by Lillian Hellman (WATCH ON THE RHINE), directed by Lewis Milestone (ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT), photographed by James Wong Howe (ABE LINCOLN IN ILLINOIS, many others), with music by Aaron Copeland (perhaps America's finest classical composer), words by Ira Gershwin, with Dana Andrews, Ann Baxter, Walter Huston, Erich Von Stroheim, Farley Granger, Walter Brennan, and many others. If the early scenes are a bit bucolic, the contrasting scenes of violence later make their point. Knowing all I know about Nazi and Soviet History (not to mention the Cold War), I still found the picture interesting, even engrossing. THE NORTH STAR is a kind of THE GRAPES OF WRATH, set in the Ukraine instead of Oklahoma, with Nazis taking the place of natural disaster.
SIGN OF THE APOCALYPSE: The wild fires in Colorado and New Mexico, coming at least two months early, are increasingly distructive and hard to put out. They are evidence of the growing effects of Climate Change. Meanwhile, the RIO+20 CONFERENCE issued its first plenary outline, with still no reportage in our Media. One day, we shall have to wake up.
Macresarf1 would write no more this day.
