Oh My God! A Vid-phone! For real! Without computers or regular phones. It real honest to goodness vid phone like in all the sci-fi books I grew up reading! I know it's maybe not as cool or revolutionary as cell phones or the internet, but it means so much to feel like you are living in an actual science fiction future now! Wow!
The other new tech device that makes me feel that way is the Kindle. Mainly, because I invented the Kindle in my head in 1991. I remember thinking how eventually kids wouldn't need all these clunky textooks and how it would be so cool if we could all have a book-like device that you could input cartridges into like a Nintendo and each cartridge would be a different textbook and you'd just press a button when you finished each page and the next one would come up. I think I may have got some of the idea from Penny's computer book in Inspector Gadget. I think someone said the idea was too unlikely.
But when I saw the Kindle I thought... jeez, so I wasn't so far off the mark. Sometimes I think of things and go, I wonder why no one's doing that and the next thing I know a year or two later everybody is into whatever I was thinking about! It happened with legwarmers! Actual to be fair I saw a Korean sort-of Kindle a few years ago at one of my Korean ESL student's houses, but it was very small, only did one line at a time on screen and it was black screen with glowing blue letters that would probably be hard to read for a long time. But still, seeing that I began to wonder why they didn't have anything remotely like it in English. And here it is. Four years later. Amazing that it took so long, but still fantastically cool!
I actually think the kindle looks a bit like a white version of the engineering spec pads they used in Star Trek the Next Gen.
Oh and this year is also 2010, my favourite of the Arthur C. Clarke 2001
series books! Futuristic days indeed!
