Finding Your Self
Blog Post by Abraham Mertens - Jul.25.2012 - 8:49 am
I came across this quote today and I wanted to share it.
"Some people say they haven't yet found themselves. But the self is not something one finds; it is something one creates."
--Thomas Szasz, Hungarian psychiatrist
I believe that the world would be a better place if people realized that we are made up of the sum of our deeds rather than our intentions.

Hear! Hear! I think when
Hear! Hear!
I think when people talk about "finding themselves", some might be referring to the good old Delphian Oracle's "know thyself" advice. Perhaps they mean that they are trying to discover what they really want, as opposed to what they think they ought to want. However, I think the process of "finding yourself" should not take up more time or effort than it takes to "create yourself". Introspection is a useful and healthy activity... As long as it doesn't lead to non-productive self-indulgence.
Thank you for making me think – and inviting me to comment. I enjoyed your clear-concise-to the point post.
Well Said
I enjoyed reading your very literary and well thought out comment. You've hit the nail squarely on the head.
I agree that taking stock of one's actions and evaluating the whole is useful and healthy. David Allen's Getting Things Done system starts with "getting clear" so you can take the next right actions. More people should do this on a regular basis.
You've made me think too.
