Among my many favorite children's books is From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. Not only did the main characters live in the region where I grew up in Connecticut, I fell in love with the idea of running away to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. When I was young, we would go into NYC often and the sheer size of the museums held me in awe! Claudia and her brother had the adventure of a lifetime.
Even today, as a grown up, there are days I'd love to run away to the Met. Fortunately there are some world class museums nearby and to even run away for an afternoon escape in the world of art is a treat. As a writer, Konigsburg taught me through this book to think from the reader's point of view. Like Beverly Cleary, she treated her young readers with respect and channeled their view of the world into classic, memorable tales.
