About Me
The Cowles-Ryan agency represents a wide range of books including Latina Beauty (Hyperion) for Latina magazine; Louisa Gilder, The Age on Entanglement (Knopf); Jim Paul, author of CATAPULT ((Harcourt); Delta Burke's, Delta Style (St. Martin's); Aryhey Stolman, several titles (Riverhead); novelist Christina Sunley (St. Martins); the best-selling Metabolic Typing Diet (Random House); Spirits of the Passage (Simon and Schuster) - and many more! In the children's book category, one of my authors is well-known Brooklynite, Dan Zanes and I also handle Irish poet/novelist Catherine Cullen, author of two children's books with Little, Brown. I also just sold a book about children's literature to Penguin that will be published next year by Diane Frankenstein. I represent the Jackie Robinson family on YA fiction and nonfiction, we are also developing a parenting series.
Another key client is the Emily Post Institute, a family that I started to represent soon after I began my agency ten years ago. The Post's had one viable title in 1996, Etiquette, 16th Ed. Since then the business has grown exponentially: their publishing program (with HarperCollins) now includes a 12-book children's series (plus children's toys and monthly column in Parents magazine); business books (plus a major seminar program to Fortune 100 business); a very active wedding program (now 7 books in print; InStyle magazine column, etc.) and much more! We've also just signed a major stationery deal that is launching December 2008. Once the Posts had the books in place and a plan, we were able to build both publicity and marketing opportunities around the brand that led to more revenue from non-book business and awareness from publicity. I have an extensive list of terrific cookbook authors on my list - among the titles that I have developed are: TARTINE (Chronicle Books), the book had a 6+ weeks run on the SF bestseller list and others, nominated for a James Beard Award. FISH FOREVER (Wiley) by Paul Johnson, IACP Best Cookbook of the Year 2008 and Best Single Subject Book 2008. David Tanis, the Executive Chef at Chez Panisse, will publish his first book in Fall 2008 (Artisan/Workman).
I am currently working with Shelburne Farms on developing their publishing program- the first title, Cooking with Shelburne Farms was just published by Viking. My partner Nina Ryan and I have been in book publishing our entire careers. Nina started at Random House and worked for Peter Osnos and edited Jimmy Carter, Tip O'Neill and many others. I worked at Doubleday and then Simon & Schuster for eight years where I was an Associate Publisher.
We have been agents for 10 years each.
