  • The beauty of simple language (my favorite poem)

    January 14, 2010

    • I discovered my favorite poem in high school French class: Déjeuner du matin by Jacques Prévert. I love the simplicity of this poem. I don't need to rely on a dictionary to read it, and the flowery language that characterizes most poems is completely stripped away so the story can shine through on its own. The raw emotion that is evoked in this poem with just a few simple lines leaves me ...
  • Finally finished the ending to my novel

    January 3, 2009

    • Today, I finally finished the ending to my NaNoWriMo novel.  My final word count is 76,654.  It is 27 chapters long, and 260 paperback-sized pages.  I'm amazed that I've even been able to put that many words together.  Now that I have a rough draft finished, I'm going to take the advice of others and put it away for a month or two.  I can start working on some other works, and there are some ...
  • I won!

    November 29, 2008

    • I wasn't sure that I was going to make it, but I slaved away today and wrote over 10,000 words to push me across the finish line!  I cannot express how elated I feel at having accomplished my goal.  I wrote a novel!  How many people can say that they've done that?  I only hope that I'll have the perseverance to edit it into something worth reading.   I have enjoyed the past month immensely, ...
  • 36 hours to go!

    November 29, 2008

    • I have two days left to write just under 10,000 words.  I have had a couple of 7,000 word days during the past month, so I still think I should be able to make it to my goal of 50,000 words.  Unfortunately, I am no where near the finish line as far as my story arc goes.  I haven't even begun writing the climax yet.   My husband is out hunting today, so I have the house to myself.  My golden ...
  • Still procrastinating...but I did see Twilight the movie. Does that count?

    November 26, 2008

    • I went to see Twilight with my 13-year-old sister last night.  I have read the books, and I knew that the movie would be disappointing in comparison.  My sister, however, had not read the books.  This was the second time that she had seen the movie, and she LOVED it.  I have to admit, they did a good job with casting Edward Cullen.  I thought that would be the hardest character to cast. ...
  • Procrastination is fun, but it doesn't get you to the finish line!

    November 24, 2008

    • My word count is just under 30,000, and instead of focusing on my work and writing, I'm taking goofy pictures of myself on my laptop.   The sad part is, I'm having way too much fun with it.  Stop procrastinating, Sarah!  Get some work done.
  • NaNoWriMo: End of Week Three

    November 22, 2008

    • The end of the third week of NaNoWriMo is approaching, and I am terribly behind schedule.  I have been spending so much time thinking about what needs to happen in the rest of my novel, that I haven't actually had the time to write anything down.  I feel like I've made some progress today, however, so I need to just keep plugging along.  I finally surpassed the half-way mark today.  I am ...
  • Halfway through NaNoWriMo

    November 17, 2008

    • I've made it halfway through National Novel Writing Month, and I am running a little behind schedule.  I'm at about 21,000 words tonight, and I should be at around 28,000 words.  I fell behind last week, as I wasn't feeling well and didn't have the opportunity to write as much as I had planned.  I made up for a lot of lost time yesterday.  I got about 7,000 words written in just a few hours. ...
  • Beginning of Day 3

    November 3, 2008

    • It's the morning of the third day of NaNoWriMo, and I feel like I'm doing pretty well.  I've got my plot outlined, and I'm three chapters into writing my first draft.  My word count is at 4045 as of last night.  I calculated out that I'll need to write about 2,000 words per day to reach my goal by the end of the month, so I'm on track. I went through some of my old essays and assignments ...
  • My first day of my first year of NaNoWriMo! Should I be scared?

    November 1, 2008

    • I think I should be scared!  I haven't really written anything (besides technical specs for work), since college.  And when I did write in college, I was always criticized for my writing style.  My teachers always were more impressed with my friend's writing than mine, because she had a large vocabulary and wrote in beautiful prose.  My style, however, is much more simple.  I like to write ...
