The Importance of being earnest...in what and...
As I read the latest reviews in the NYT Book review, I am struck by the degree to which fewer and fewer of us read for serious purposes outside of entertainment in fiction. It used to be the kind of winnowing, soul-searching, adventure and mental stimulation now associated with today's readers of the nonfiction list were to be found browsing in the literary aisles. What has happened? Have ...
criticism
I'm not much of a typist, hunt and peck, the proverbial chicken in the grain field. What I'm looking for is constructive or destructive criticism. At my age it's water off a ducks back.

Heaven on Earth
I just came back from Heaven on Earth. Or so it should be called. Glenhighland Farm in Morris, NY, where I just spent 6 days with my 3 dogs and a friend/student with her one dog. No leashes, no time schedules, no phone, no computer, no email, no contact with much of the outside world, AND NO TICKS! Just 4 dogs, 60 miles of trails and now 4 very, very tired and dirty dogs (and me).more to come ...
Manic Pixie Dream Girls
This won't be a long blog because I'm late to class. Last night on NPR, I heard a story about an idealized female character in films, the Manic Pixie Dream Girl. This is a woman who exists to pull a too-staid man out of the doldrums and make him realize life is great. This is Natalie Portman in Garden State, Katherine Hepuburn in Bringing Up Baby, and the character of Maude in Harold and ...
France and you, your writing
Where were we? Reasons to go to France this June, and to take my poetry workshop in Auvillar.Reason number 6: You can't not write in Auvillar. The air is perfumed with roses, the river is silver and green, the laughing gulls sound like tugboats from a children's book.Reason number 5: The elders in Auvillar will tell you stories about the war. They will tell you who helped the Nazis, ...
Pablo Neruda's Love Sonnet 62: A Translation
Buddhism on the Streets of San Francisco/NYT
Hey, I'm in the New York Times today doing what I do very well---nothing. See the article---I'm in the photo, shot October 4, 2008. I'm the one in the burgundy top. Unless you're my mother, you're forgiven if you don't recognize me from the back. Gotta run---but I posted more indepth commentary and photos of SF Zen Center at my site:
THE MOST DEBASING THING
There isn't the slightest doubt: History is under mutation, a dramatic mutation. This is because the previous century, though punctuated with endurance and pain, did not truly hold the promises it was bearing. The chosen guides were not the right ones? This is partly true. The year 2009 points in the horizon, and yet we are in a time of uncertainty and incredibleness. Nations are unexpectedly ...
