The Joy Still Lingers - Bookstore blog
Each of my book events is special and wonderful in that they allow me to connect with readers and potential readers. Each venue has its own aura and personality which contributes to the overall experience. One which stands out was a Saturday afternoon event at Origin Books, Art & Cafe in Nanuet, New York. As an author and avid reader, I have been to countless bookstores. But Origin was so unique. Located in a mall, the owners had gone to extreme measures to make you feel welcome whether you were an author, a regular or just browsing. From the mall side, the displays in the window beckoned and foretold of a memorable experience. The large waterfall was situated not far from a bank of movable embroidered chairs and benches with soft cushions. The rows of bookcases were arranged so that the colorful carpet runners remained visible. The displays were full of some of the most diverse and interesting books I have ever seen. And the walls were painted in soft desert colors upon which paintings having complimentary hues were displayed. In the rear of the store was a beverage and sweets bar. Origin was what a bookstore should be. Alas, the mall saw less and less foot traffic which finally caused the owners to forsake their dream. But it lingers in my mind (and the photos we took that day) as the only bookstore I would actually consider living in.
