Sunday Book Days
Sunday. It was a day of book browsing frenzy and we couldn’t get enough. A friend and I rode out to Berkeley and hit some of our favorite bookshops, but the one we saved for last was Shambhala Booksellers; a very small space that sold books from different wisdom traditions. Approaching the store was always a treat, I would linger outside and look at what was displayed in the window: Different books, spiritual figurines and statues. As I walked through the door, I enjoyed the feeling of being greeted by the calming music. I left the outside buzz behind and entered a tranquil space. Looking up, the walls were covered in rich images of Tibetan tapestry—colors filled me. And of course the books—it was fun to explore, to open books to different worlds, knowing they would be there next Sunday and the Sunday after.
It was a sad day when Shambhala had to close its doors after 35 years. It was November 26, 2003. How appropriate that Shambhala should enter my mind through the prompt of this week’s blog topic in its closing anniversary month. So sad that they and other small booksellers are forced to close their doors

Closing Anniversary
Hello Rebbecca,
I truly enjoyed reading about "Shambhala Booksellers" I'm sorry, too, that they have closed. I miss a similar small book shoppe in Cape May that filled my Sundays and dull days with joy. You reminded me all over again... You expressed it so perfectly!: The display window, calming music, the spiritual figurines and statues, the books. And there was always the fragrance of a candle burning.
Thank you for filling my senses once more!:-)
Truly,
Catherine Nagle

Hi Catherine,
It’s nice to see you here. It makes me happy that reading this sparked your memory of your small bookshop in Cape May and filled your senses—wonderful! Even if these places are no longer here, at least we can remember. :)
