Evie Shockley Poet/Scholar

A Community of Writers

July 31, 2009, 8:29 pm

Greetings!  This post is belated and, as mine always seem to be, brief, but I just wanted to report here that my week with the Community of Writers in Squaw Valley, CA was fantabulous!  It was my first time back since 10 years ago, and I had worried that my warm-fuzzy memories from 1999 had maybe been dipped a few too many times in the river of nostalgia, if you know what I mean.  : )  But, in fact, the workshop and the valley were both as wonderful as I remembered them to be.  I think it has to do with the fact that every poet there is responsible for generating a new poem for each of the seven days we meet.  How could you not bond under such conditions???  Thus, the community-in-name becomes a community-in-fact in about 24 hours, which leaves six more days for people to build on those connections.  We stretch new writerly muscles and watch each other's work take risks and take flight.  I was constantly amazed by all of the fantastic first drafts that people brought to our morning sessions -- the quality of the work made it easy for us to bring strong and celebratory energy to each poem, despite the fact that we were often sleep deprived (because of jet lag and/or staying up all night talking to poets and working on that next poem).

So, if there was anyone out there thinking about applying to this workshop who decided against it this year, I would strongly encourage you to reconsider and put in your application next year.  Both times I've been a part of this Community of Writers, I've come home with a stack of new work, a cluster of new friends, and a renewed sense of joy in the possibilities of poetry.  It was just what I needed!  If anyone reading this was with me in the lovely valley last week, I thank you for your presence and the chance to exchange work and ideas and laughs with you, and I send you warm wishes for many wonderful weeks of poetry in the year to come...

Peace.

Your pilgrimage to California

Evie, I enjoyed your reading at Grace. You have a wonderful singing voice. It is very effective to 'supplement' and amplify the spoken word with song (at least for those poets who can hold a tune...). Wasn't the venue grand? I am happy to report that we raised $5000 in ticket sales plus a small cut from the book sales. Volunteering worked out well for me in that I had a little bit of face time with you. Glad to hear that the workshop was "fantabulous". I am definitely planning to sign up next year (if I'm still alive and kicking).

P.S.: My RR mailbox has stopped functioning. Please use my regular email address.

fantastic!

Ana, thanks for volunteering your time to the Community -- and what great news that is, about the success of the fundraiser!  It was lovely to meet you, also.  Many thanks for the kind words.  The reading was a real pleasure for me; a "homecoming" and a chance to hear favorite poets and mentors once again...

Till next time one of us makes it to the other's coast --

Peace.

You know you're a poet, deep down!  Now if this isn't your excuse to let your inner poet out, what is??  : )

Next time, Jessica -- there will surely be another chance for me to get out to the left coast.  : )

Thanks for your note!

Another happy camper

I was blessed with a last minute permission to attend and it was one of the best weeks I have had. The generosity of the writers and the quality of the work was a gift. There will be many bops and prisoners constraints born of your talk. Thank you!

Catharine!

Hey -- nice surprise to find your comment here!  I'm also very glad you were able to come.  Though there was a rental car that seemed to be conspiring against you, you were obviously meant to be with us.  : )

I'm looking forward to opening a journal or two within the next year, only to find a poem in one of those wonderful forms and a name that rings a Community-of-Writers bell...  I can totally see it happening!  Much joy and continued writing gifts to you.
