- mela_lyn asked: How well do you know your characters before you write? Do you do any kind of character study or discover them as you go? I used to start out with some basics–characteristics, jobs, background, appearances, etc. The basics. And then I would usually have an image or idea for the opening, and I would have the plot sketched out. But to be honest, I was never all that familiar with ...

- So cathschaffstump asks: Do you identify with any of your characters? In what ways? Has that changed as you've continued on your writing journey?I suppose I identify in some ways with them. For instance, with Reisil I made her dreadfully afraid of heights (which I am). Course she gets over it and that's just wishful thinking for me. I've also used some of my experiences to give flavor to the ...

- This one comes from Tyler:And here's a question--if it has been asked before, I'm sorry; I missed it-----When and how did you get the idea for PATH OF FATE, and after getting the idea and after beginning to write it, how long did it take you complete the first draft of the book?So the answer to that one requires me to take a step back a little to what was happening before writing Path of Fate.Way ...

- So here we go with answers to questions. Remember if you want to know something about me, the writing, particular books or what have you, post a question in the comments here or here So first up: roseaponi asks: What kinds of books are irresistible to you? Is there a certain type of plot or character or world that you can’t get enough of? That’s really a terrific question and I’m not sure I ...

- So I managed about 2300 words today. That was really good, considering. Had xrays done, but no word yet on the results of that. Ankle is still swollen. Still doesn't hurt that much, which probably means I have to be extra careful. Pain is supposed to make you aware so you don't further hurt yourself. So I think I'm in danger of being stoooopid. But that means I don't have an air splint yet--not ...

- The deadline for opting in or out of the google settlement has been delayed until September. Also, the Justice Department is finally looking into the Google mess because what they did was pretty shady--I would argue downright illegal. Finally. Don't know if anything will come of that, but I sure hope so. Because as far as I can tell, Google is ripping off copyright left and right.ETA: Also, for ...

- So wow, it's been months since I've posted here. There's been a lot going on. The day job, of course. And then finishing and revising Bitter Night, which will be out in October. Check out the link for the new cover. Then The Turning Tide will be out in a week--May 5th. That's the third in the Crosspointe Chronicles. Here's a little bit about it:They were the best of friends: Ryland, the son of ...

- Elizabeth Bear, aka matociquala , has a post today on writing the other. This has caused me to muse (inconveniently I might add, since my deadline is flying at me like an asteroid.) I have a Ph.D. in Literature. Specifically, I specialize(d) in Victorian literature and literary theory. More specifically than that, I have been most interested in Victorian women's fiction, feminist theory, ...

- swan_tower said this today: 2008 has managed to simultaneously vanish into thin air and overstay its welcome. Roll on, 2009, and may you be better than your predecessor.I couldn't agree more. I'm still deep in copy edits and so this must be short. Happy 2009 to come, everyone. May the worst of the next year be better than the best of last. Cheers to you.

- As many of you know, since I’ve talked about it incessantly here and on my other blog, I just wrapped up edits for The Turning Tide. Pleased as I am about that, there’s no rest for the wicked, or writers for that matter. Bitter Night is due in January and I was over halfway done when I stopped to work on The Turning Tide edits. It’s now been a couple of months and as much as I love this ...

- So first, before we begin the entertainment, how was your Thanksgiving? Our was very nice. Okay, making 10 pounds of Garlic Mashed potatoes in the camp trailer was a little entertaining especially since a lot of our utensils are boxed up, but they turned out okay. For what it's worth, that's 10 pounds of potatoes, a bound of shredded cheese, a bound of bacon, five (sometimes six) heads of roasted ...

- The Turning Tide revision: Done. This was one of the hardest revisions I've done. And you know, I'm not entirely sure why. The book felt pretty solid when I turned it in. Yeah, there's always revisions and things that aren't working and new scenes to write, but overall, it felt more solid than other books I've turned in. i get my editorial letter and map out the revision process. The front end ...

- Tomorrow, November 4th, is the release of my new book, The Black Ship. It is a truly magical book. Seriously. It actually does magic. You doubt me? You think I’m nuts? Well, I probably am, but I tell you, my book really can do magic. I’ll prove it to you. *drum roll and please imagine that the delivery of this next bit is in a loud, ringing voice of authentic prophecy* The release of my ...
