A fictionalized account of Anne Frank's diary is causing some furor. In the book, Anne and her boyfriend have physical contact and talk of sex. I am of two minds about this. Basically, if done well, honestly, discretely and without puerile intent, I find it acceptable. I am a writer who has taken...

Woo-hoo! Another good review! Jules' Book Reviews comes through! Duckworth is very busy this summer trying to find a new commissioning editor; I haven't heard from them directly, but as far as Amazon is concerned, the US paperback edition will be out at the end of August.

Ann Seymour’s I’ve Always Loved You is a book everyone interested in writing historical memoir should read. It is a remarkable example in emphasizing how to sustain a narrative voice when history is a big part of the memoir. Fascinating and heartbreaking are the first two words that come to mind...

I cannot say it will be wisdom; however, you may find my memory useful as such so I will simply share a memory with you that...

Antisemitism is on the rise again. Never since the end of the Second World War have there been so many antisemitic incidents worldwide. The world suffers from amnesia and disregarding the lessons from the past looks the other way. Film director Mel Gibson releases The Passion of the Christ, a...

While looking for examples to show my clients how to find transcripts archived on websites, I came upon: http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/05252007/profile.html So, I  submitted this comment: Thank you, Mr. Bill Moyers, and everyone at The Journal and PBS for interviewing Ms. Maxine Hong Kingston...

When I was a tadpole in London, England there was no one particularly favorite Xmas, although there was a very sad & drab one the year my Daddy died. Xmas was, as my English mistress said (hush now, back in the '50s that was how we called our teachers!), an acceptable form cuz when handwritten...

Occasionally I go exploring book-wise. I used to do the same with records back in my rock ‘n’ roll days, and most of the time I found pearls among the commercial swine. So it is with books, I find – some pearls, a few zircons, an occasional lump of coal, a rare bucket of mud. Whitcroft’s book, a...
