Orhan Pamuk, Nobel Prize Lecture, 2006...
In his Nobel Lecture, Pamuk provides a fairly comprehensive reply to the question, "Why do you write?" Who has not been asked that question? Is there any writer who has not asked herself / himself that question? Why? Why the fuck am I doing this...

My neighborhood bookclub met tonight to discuss Julie and Julia, by Julie Powell.
(For those of you who don't know, twenty-nine-year-old Julie Powell set a goal of making every recipe in Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking--all in one year, in a tiny apartment in New York. Lots of...

The room at Deptford again, a month or two later. Will Shakespeare, Ben Jonson and Thomas Kyd, who is in a kind of depressed stupor, at the table, drinking, staring at Christopher (Kit) Marlowe's body on the floor, stretched in front of the table. If you've met me in person, especially if you've met me at a party, you might be stunned to hear me call myself an Introvert. Get me in a group and I smile a bunch, especially when I'm in a crowd of people I'm excited to meet. I talk, I talk, I talk... I give my opinions, sometimes loudly, I...

Can happy writers produce great art?
I must admit, I'm a skeptic. I like my writers skirting at the edge of life. I like them alcoholic and drug-ridden, depressed and suicidal. As if the page is the only thing that is keeping them alive.
I don't believe in the happy-writer.
I am certain, that if...

So I've been trying to think of what the most appropriate kind of opening post (beyond the usual Greetings fare, which doesn't really count) would be for this brand new site. I mean, most people are blog savvy by now, and they're going to expect something insightful at best, passably entertaining...
