I'm sure I'm not the only scribe who goes through periods of self-doubt, spells of intense reflection and turmoil. I had one of those episodes this weekend and it wasn't pleasant. A long interval of berating myself for not being a better writer, a more powerful and compelling writer--perhaps then...

Gustave Flaubert "Talent is long patience." -- Gustave Flaubert A few years ago I lay on the couch in my living room, curled up into a fetal position, intermittently groaning and blinking back tears. I felt as though everything I had worked for had been ripped away from me, as though I...

Let me start with a small example. Last night I updated Facebook riding home from the gym: Colorful girls laughing it up on the 1 train. Loving their energy, but tourist woman glancing up nervously, cautiously. Aw. They won't hurt u. I was really moved by the girls and then startled by the out-of-...

This weekend, I got a last-minute invitation to tonight's live performance and taping of The Moth. Damn. Kristin Chenoweth, Mos Def . . . you can read the list. Any of these people would be cool to see read/perform. All of them at once. Nice. I get asked a lot why I finally moved to New York...
