Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are is a stupendous illustrated book.  It is my older sister's favorite book, but it isn't mine.  I love it; I read it to my children, and my younger son liked it well enough that he read it to one of his classes when it was his turn to choose....

Here, an English translation of my text about Maurice Sendak:  On May 8, 2012 Maurice Sendak at 83 years old took his boat and went to a distant island. He left behind a full life, painted with all kinds of emotions all intense… all real. From the emotional wounds that loads a post-war...

My three-year-old has been going through a phase of refusing to go to nursery school, after being thrilled with it for a month. She cried in school for a week, so her teacher invited me to visit for a day. After observing her in her classroom, I have worked out that her issues probably have to do...

I have to admit it: I was wrong!  I was wrong about the words of Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are. I was almost sure that Max says, "Let the wild rumpus begin!", but he doesn't.  The movie has it right!  "Let the wild rumpus start!"  Earlier today, I was shopping and...

Okay, I have to admit that I am disturbed by the advertisement for the new movie, Where the Wild Things Are, a film adaptation of Maurice Sendak's book (okay, it's not really a novel, but a children's story...one of the best in my sister Sally's and my opinion, but I digress) of the same name.  Why...

Cookies. Cake. Carrots. Candy. One of these things is not like the others. Often I'm asked, "Where do you find your inspiration?"  Well, aside from Berkeley, where a pivotal plot point once accosted at me in a hotel lobby, I don't know where the ideas come from. However, I do know that I...

First, I want to apologize if I’ve been . . . grumpy. Grumbly. Cranky. Throwing small tantrums. Complaining about being uninspired. Writing blogs about futility and a passive-aggressive Zen approach to life’s matters, large and small. It’s been a tough month. But it has also been a GLORIOUS month....

When I was seven, Maurice Sendak published Where the Wild Things Are ... as controversial in its time and place as the Harry Potter series. I loved the book--though I was too old for it, by that point, at least in my reading tastes--and particularly enjoyed the illustrations. They captured...
