It's cold and flu season, so you may be sick right now. It's likely you'll be sick at some point this year. Maybe you'll suffer from Super Bowl flu on Monday after too much partying on Sunday (or your boss will assume you partied too much if you call in sick Monday). So what are your rights? Can...

Oh, the smells - not coming off me or my clothing or shoes, mind you, but the smells, the odors and fragrances I so often assume as normal, those luscious olfactory delights that have been missing while I was down with the flu - the smells are back. Someone is frying bacon.  Bread is baking....

Years ago, I got food poisoning.  Lying on the couch—10 or 11 or 12 a.m..; unsure—the repeating cycle of "I wish I would die" took 20-40 minutes, commencing immediately after I vomited.  Which was the exact point where I would feel better and convince myself that maybe it was over and...

My father began dialysis today. The procedure takes three hours. Fifteen minutes to go and he wants to stop. I don’t understand.   I try to reason out by explaining that with a few minutes left it’s best to just finish the process. But he’s uptight, cranky and being very difficult. He’s aware...

A writing day begins after a two week absence for illness.  Honestly, I thought The Writer had left me for another.  I've been working and coping with troubling cold but I haven't heard a sneeze out of him.  I kept trying to entice him but he stayed away.  Yes, he did have some...

Someone was deliberately inserting two flaming red pokers into my eye sockets and pressing them in until they struck my brain.  It was not pleasant. The burning eyes helped distract me from the folks planting meat cleavers into the back of my skull. I don't know why they were doing this....

Was feeling ill by late yesterday afternoon. Sore thoat, malaise, a little nauseated, that kind of thing. Drinking a lot of fluids but my throat felt parched. Got up this morning to work and added lots of aching joints, especially my back and hand, to my list of problems. Got dressed for work, hit...

A day can turn like spilling coffee. It’s dry one minute, wet and hot the next. My wife Ann and I were planning to see the play The Vigil at the Mark Taper Forum when two hours before the performance, she said her stomach was suddenly queasy. She didn’t feel sick per se but was worried she’d have...
