The White Road and Other Stories has been reviewed by Jen Michalski in the Winter Issue of the JMWW Journal, and a very nice review it is too: " Hershman's other strength is her ability to keep the reader on her toes. She weaves the warbly, neon threads of magical realism together with the...

Back to work today, which is something of a shock to the system. But at least everyone else has been away too, so there isn't a huge amount of emails to struggle through, thank goodness. After all, I’ve taken most of the day to recover from the shock of waking up to snow. Snow! In Surrey....

Lord H and I got the year off to a suitably holy start by going to church for Epiphany today. Ah, the Epiphany hymns - you really can't beat them. Fantastic to sing Earth has Many a Noble City (the tune is in the link if you have that facility - so don't be startled!) once more - the perfect...

Lord H and I have spent another wonderful birdwatching day, this time at Pulborough Brooks and have added yet more new birds to our list, including a nuthatch, coal tits, marsh tits, a wren and a pintail. This brings us to 63 birds for the year so far, I think, so definitely a third of the way...

Lord H and I celebrated his last day off before going back to work by taking a very pleasant stroll around Thursley Common. I really love it there - there's something so peaceful about it and it always seems miles from anywhere. Fabulous. Anyway, we spotted a pair of stonechats, siskins, meadow...

Ah, the joys of central heating. It’s a miracle, you know, and so wonderfully warm in the flat. Bliss. Not only that but I think the plumber has improved the system at least 1000% by redoing the pipes and draining some of the blockages – so now our radiators are the hottest they’ve been in fifteen...

We've almost completed our move to Alabama. Today, we'll be making the final leg of the trip, continuing on from Marbury to Gulf Shores, where my parents live. I'm excited and nervous to be home, to tell the truth. There is a sort of nascent terror growing inside of me. I don't know why Alabama...

"Go off and get a job and see the world and travel if you can; anything that widens your experience. I always knew I wanted to be a writer. But I did lots of other jobs to pay my way, to pay the rent. I don't wish it had been any other way," wrote British author Maggie O'Farrell. Long...

Lots of good news today – I’ve sold my short story, Painting from Life, to Eternal Press in Canada, so have been busy signing contracts and filling in forms for them in order to prepare for e-publication. It’s great to be able to find a home for that particular story as it’s one I’m still very...
