What a night! It was so wonderful to meet so many of our local authors who gathered at literary institution Tosca last night for a swell party. I also want to say a big THANK YOU to our co-hosts Will and Debi Durst for endless laughs, Tosca'a Jeannette Etheridge for the best venue we could have...

by Jack, your bony fido newshound. The dog who keeps track of the plot. Wey-hey, folks! So where's the gig? In the Red Room, I guess. Let me check the boundaries for you. OK, the name's Jack. Twenty-five killergrams of lightning reaction and a bundle of laughs if you're not trespussing on my patch...

Like any other morning. I sit down at my desk, turn on the computer, drink some coffee, and step into the Red Room. First stop, the Blogs. Who will it be this morning? Ah, some of the usual suspects, and I'm happy to see them all. And a few folks I don’t recognize – it’s nice to see new faces, read...

My gentle readers, I don’t know what’s up. I don’t know if it’s the smoke coming from the mountains, but I feel like everything is off. It’s not just that Cody’s is closing, or George Carlin and Cyd Charisse died, and it’s not just the fact that the media thinks it’s news that Larry Birkhead bought...

Many of you may have noticed something different on redroom.com. Last night we began to roll out completely new author and member search pages. I'm very excited about this as it will allow us even more opportunity to showcase the fantastic community we have here. This blog post is going to focus...

I don’t attend many author interviews or readings. I don’t have anything against such events, but I just can’t seem to find the time. Yesterday, however, I found the time to see and hear Salman Rushdie at Herbst Theater in San Francisco.   I won’t go into detail about what he said. Suffice it to...

I've been trying to add my essay, "A New Wrinkle" to my articles page for two days, but let me stress, this is not Red Room's fault. It's Word. Bane of my life. Every time I try to open it, I get a message that the file may be in use or not a perfect Word document??? Anybody got any ideas...

My blog about choking out librarians and booksellers at BEA earned the BEST BLOG spot on the front page of this website. I guess choking out librarians taps into some kind of deeply held subconscious desire in the lit community. I mean who doesn’t want to slap a sleeper hold on a librarian? Here's...

I'm trying to remember when I've been in a competitive situation. Mills was competitive, that was for sure. It was good for me, that competition. It drove me to be better than I thought I could be. I remember being upset one day that I received a C on a paper and everyone else got A's and B's. I...

For years I lost at Monopoly on purpose; trying to win seemed desperate and unseemly. I've never played team sports, opting for dance and yoga and hiking and collaborative games. It took me nine years to get my BA because I kept dropping out, and my college transcript is a mess of As and Ws,...
