If that one butterfly, whafting its immediate South American air around the globe, can alter the ice flows in Norway, what have I done?   It is my fault, no two ways about it. While taking out the refuse I tossed the recyclable bottles and cans into the garbage dumpster. And was left...

For months I scoured tips, quarries, derelict land, and gathered the parts of my Frankenbike. The wheels were the hardest to find, because once twisted it was all but impossible to hammer them back to true. Finally, one of my mates swapped me my entire birds egg collection, fifty-eight eggs, for a...

My local council issues every house with a black bin for recycling and a list of approved rubbish: newspapers, milk cartons, plastic bottles etc. So far so good. But our bin for ordinary household waste is green...

Library Desk Made from Recycled Books   Whoever thought of this idea is pretty bright... After a devastating fire in the Architecture building burned down a portion of the library, Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands purchased a new collection to replace the old volumes...

Dear Ocean, I was so sorry to hear about the accident. My heart goes out to you and your family members. I've been hearing how awful your first medical team has been, so I’m glad you got a second opinion to make sure you get the care you need. How can I help? I can write letters to people who know...

How does one answer the question "Paper or Plastic?" asked by checkers and baggers at your local store?  Why must those be the only options?  This question seems to leave only a choice of the lesser of two "evils" - with paper eliciting visions of deforestation and plastic...

Last night I was channel surfing and accidentally came upon a riveting 2008 Jordanian documentary called Recycle, by filmmaker Mahmoud al Massad, on PBS's Independent Lens.  (You may read about it and view a clip at http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/recycle/film.html.)  It was...
