The Edmonton Journal ran a heartwarming story recently: “…But I’m a first-time novelist. I’m basically unknown, and I haven’t published a lot of stuff other than this novel. And then you look at the fellows I was up against”— including CBC radio host Jonathan Goldstein and previous Leacock...

My husband and Veronica in Salinas County or close by last year. Better late than never? I don't think that adage is true anymore. By the time I've cottoned on to a new technology it's passe. (My 4 year old laptop might as well be a museum relic, my cell-phone is so dumb.. How dumb is it?? well,...

When I got my master’s, my mom invited me to stay home and devote full-time attention to my writing.  It was my lifelong dream, after all—she offered me a roof, rent-free, and all the time I needed to get started.  (Very ROOM OF ONE’S OWN, I know…) I cleaned out the guest bedroom, turning...

Once upon a time, an agent liked a story I wrote and asked if I had a book.  I did.  He liked the novel, too.  He sent it to publishers and one bought it for good money.  The agent also sent the manuscript to movie studios.  One of those bought it, too, for even more money...

I've just come across another tirade against the literary worth of "Fifty Shades of Grey" To my mind - unfairly perhaps - these tales of woe come from people who praise anything with Vampires in them. Go figure. One persons desire to have sex with fangs is another persons toothless wonder. But I...

And - if I thought it would really work - I might do it myself. Of course, I am not quite the level of celebrity as Ms. Rivers is, and I doubt I could manage to have a film crew present to record the event.  And Costco (as far as I know) has not banned my book from its shelves. 'Cause if they...

If you are going to go the ePublication route - and a number of established authors, even with traditional publishers, are doing so - then take heed. There are ways to get on lists of those with whom you have some connection. There are decades of alumni from your university, but you are the...

Fifty Shade of Grey has now got the green light (or is that the red light) from Dr. Ruth. As the article states, the book and its author probably do not need much further publicity. But who knows, Dr. Ruth tells ten friends and they tell ten friends and they tell... If it is helping out an author...
