Reading has always involved a secret meeting between the writer and the reader. It has some of the aura of an antiquated confessional booth because the writer and the reader never see each other.  It's a meeting where the reader recreates the book in his or her singular imagination. ...

I was in the car listening to NPR when I heard Maurice Sendak died. And at the news, my eyes stung and tears threatened. Not only for Mr. Sendak, I’d never known him except through his words, rather for...

My favorite moment of the day is reading a story to my little boy at bedtime.  As most writers, I am first a reader and so I love stories especially children’s books which when done well are sublime in their innocence and clever in their nuance.  And as most mothers, I cherish those quiet...

Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are is a stupendous illustrated book.  It is my older sister's favorite book, but it isn't mine.  I love it; I read it to my children, and my younger son liked it well enough that he read it to one of his classes when it was his turn to choose....

I titled today's blog in honor of Maurice Sendak who died today (he once said the above in an interview) This is one of those times when quite simply, words fail. You need Sendak's pictures to do the talking.

My three-year-old has been going through a phase of refusing to go to nursery school, after being thrilled with it for a month. She cried in school for a week, so her teacher invited me to visit for a day. After observing her in her classroom, I have worked out that her issues probably have to do...

I have to admit it: I was wrong!  I was wrong about the words of Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are. I was almost sure that Max says, "Let the wild rumpus begin!", but he doesn't.  The movie has it right!  "Let the wild rumpus start!"  Earlier today, I was shopping and...

Okay, I have to admit that I am disturbed by the advertisement for the new movie, Where the Wild Things Are, a film adaptation of Maurice Sendak's book (okay, it's not really a novel, but a children's story...one of the best in my sister Sally's and my opinion, but I digress) of the same name.  Why...
