I believe in being prepared, in case luck strikes.   A couple of years ago, I got invited to participate in a four-woman anthology called Sins of the Sirens.  The other women on the invitation list were Christa Faust, Mehitobel Wilson, and Maria Alexander:  all of whom had been acclaimed as...

I wear an opal ring. They say it is bad luck.  I am a marked woman because it is not my birthstone and I was not born in October. They say its curse is lessened if given as a gift. But I think not, since I coveted this ring and its dainty setting, its years of history hidden away in the...

I pulled into my driveway one Friday afternoon and turned off the car. When I tried to remove the key, it wouldn't come out. The lock had failed, the key was jammed, and the car wouldn't budge. As I dialed around for a good locksmith, it occurred to me that this could have happened when I was out...

I have no personal acquaintanceship with luck myself. However, I know an old fellow whose middle name is “Lucky,” Elmer Fontaine, 91, from the Blue Woods up in the Pertelote Region. I thought I’d ask him about it. I found Elmer on his rickety porch swing, popping fleas on his snoring hounddog...

Frankly I don't believe in luck  (good or bad) - at least the kind we don't create ourselves. Way back in my teen years I clipped out a quote from somewhere that said: "you don't get what you wish for, hope for or pray for, you get what you expect." And, I've never forgotten those words....

“Patsy, you could fall in a sewer and come out wearing a new hat. You are just plain lucky”, friends say. What some might call luck, I call a positive attitude and a slightly off-kilter sense of humor. If I fall into a sewer, and I have, I make quite a splash. But then I take a shower, think...

Luck   Morton Chalfy               “I just won the Lotto!” is one side of the coin of Luck, and “I’ve just been hit by lightning!” is the other.  But are they different at all?  Somehow I don’t think so.  Luck seems to be the meeting of several factors at the same time and place producing...

Luck is not a lady, but when it's bad, it's a cruel mistress, no doubt. It is merciless and wanton, harsh and humbling-a figurative public scolding from your mother. It strikes at any time and yet its whimsy seems to give way to a pointed deific punishment because truly it seems as though bad luck...

It was hot and it was Lincoln, Nebraska. I’d been hitchhiking from British Columbia – sixteen years old – partially because I had lost the Greyhound bus pass my parents had purchased, but mostly because I wanted to hitchhike the way any self-respecting hippy did. I wanted to find the Merry...

My older brother, one of my guardians growing up, seemed to have a preoccupation with perfection. I suppose that’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it became annoying at times. It was St. Patrick’s Day—junior high school, seventh grade. I enjoyed home economics and shop classes the best. I had my...
