I was pleased with myself yesterday .  I took a huge stack of books back to the Library. I didn't need to take them back: they hadn't expired and there's no limit on the number of books I can take out.  The spare room/study looked neater. Mostly it made me feel virtuous because I could cross those...

A pile of about 20 books has been set to the side for the past two weeks. I’ve been meaning to take them to the bookstore to see if I could rid myself of them in exchange for a trade slip. Yesterday, I decided, it was time. I went through the stacks for one last look. One book I sat with for about...

Hooray, the copyedited BOBBY THE BRAVE (SOMETIMES) is out the door!!! Even though it's all done digitally, I still print it out on old-fashioned paper and give it the once-over before hitting "send" . . .  Here's more reason for Peepy and I to celebrate. Recently, we were invited to visit...

To my great relief, it was still here. Nestled among trees, on the corner of 10th Street in Greenwich Village. Still filled with burnished lamps, and a panoply of books that chattered to themselves. I'd been here many times, but this time it was in the middle of an exhausting tour, where it's easy...

I’ve found it surprising to realise how ‘noisy’ and chaotic most of my life has been. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, however it’s been interesting for me to look back at my life and see that even as a child I always sought ways to find a place just to ‘be’, no distractions, no chaos; just me,...

Wheeeee!!! We got some great news about BOBBY. The New York Public Library named it one of the 100 BEST BOOKS FOR CHILDREN and adults and animals!!!!! (I may have added that last part.) (A tragedy involving Peepy once occurred at the NYPL, but it ended well.) Here's NYPL's own Betsy Bird's review ...

Newly on a budget, and with hours more time to spend as I like, I've discovered the wonders and riches of my public library. Where in the past, I would choose to visit favorite local bookstores -- Black Oak, Cody's on Fourth St., Mrs. Dalloway's on College, all fine and admirable  shops -- I am now...

Words fail me. Words cannot express... I can’t tell you how... I wish I could say... I don’t know how to say this... I can’t say. Who can say? What can you say? Be careful what you say. There are no words for...Mere words, empty words, loose talk, psychobabble, happy talk, gibberish, false words,...

Ike still slips sometimes and calls himself illiterate, but he's not.  Not anymore. He knows it, but it's hard to stop seeing himself that way.  For the last ten years he's fought hard to learn reading and writing skills with the help of a tutor at Project Second Chance, an adult literacy program...

Writing historical fiction involves developing close relationships with libraries and librarians. Cathy visits The Indextrious Reader blog to talk about historical research: Still, history books were just the beginning. I was handed file upon file bursting with old newspaper and magazine articles,...
