What I admire the most in other human beings is not their accomplishments, but their relationship to life.  My definition of a hero: a person who is joyful among the inevitable sorrows.  Joy is the most admirable quality, the most courageous in my book, second only to a loving heart.  But the two...

I never met a book by Ruth Reichl I haven’t loved, and my adoration continued with this book. Where others were hearty meals, Not Becoming My Mother was a deceptively simple snack. (I’m certain that Ms. Reichl, editor of Gourmet Magazine, would find a more elegant food analogy, but I, alas, am but...

It's a valid question:   What makes a character the hero of the story?  Is it untold bravery in the face of certain danger?  Protectiveness?  Kindness or compassion? My favorite hero of all time is (who else) Mr. Darcy, from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.  Mr. Darcy exhibited none of the above...

God put human beings on earth, Barney Simon used to say, because he likes to hear stories. I met Barney through Nicky Rebelo. During his time at university, Nicky had worked on a creative writing project. He had been in the thick of some weird shit with 32 Battalion during his army stint, and was...

Above my monitor is the August of my calendar, my hero looking cool in designer shades to protect his eyes from the glare of television cameras as he spreads blue paint on a clapboard building in some neighborhood of Washington, DC. Taken the day before his inauguration, this picture speaks to me...

I saw Buzz Aldrin last week, for the first time in my life.  Of course you know who he is: the second person to step foot on the Moon.  Nowhere in recent American lore are there people more truly and incontrovertibly heroes than the Apollo astronauts.  Volunteering to get shot into space in a metal...

Top of my heroes  list is a woman, Burma’s leader Aung San Suu Kyi who has not been allowed to fulfill the post to which she was elected almost 20 years ago by the brutal army generals who seized power to negate a landslide election in her favor. To many people she’s a Mandela for the 21st century...
