When I turned 50 I started to have un-birthdays.  By the time I was distastefully having my 40th all over againI wondered, why!  Then, like Bob, when I turned 39 I knew it was all worth it.   Oh, have you taken the Real Age Test yet; 60 can be the new 40 if you try.

Now's the time to really be original. Cliches are the quickest way to date yourself. "If I only knew then what I know now." A smart-aleck radio voice said, "Well you didn't, so get over it and get on with it now...", something to that effect. It also helps not to sing Beatles...

How did you know that I'm supposed to be getting older?  Did a certain someone speak out of turn, squealing like a runaway porker stuck in the mud?   My hair is the same shade of gray that it's been for the past ten years so I know you received no hint there.  At least that's the way it looks to me...

"Old age isn't so bad when you consider the alternative" -Maurice Chevalier Maybe it's because of our culture's relatively new glorification of youth, or because longer life spans raise new questions about health, financial security, and continued purpose, but it seems like we never...

I once wrote about Edna Cornelius, the self-taught artist, who had a zest for living.  I made the statement (or at least tried to imply) that when I grew up and older that I wanted to be just like her. She lived until she was ninety-seven and to loosely quote (grown-up) Walter from the movie,...

I think it was George Bernard Shaw who said youth was wasted on the young. When I heard it as a teenager I decided he didn't know what he was talking about and just envied those whose candles were not guttering out. I've lived a bit since then and now I know what he meant.  It seems strange that we...

The Best Part of getting Older is being able to write about it with authority. But hey, we’re all getting older from the minute we are born. However, I stepped off the curb and the old age truck hit me when I turned eighty-one. That’s right, eighty-one. So, all you youngins sit back and read about...

Graying in My Life By Michael Lee Johnson    Graying in my life growing old like a stagnant bucket of rain water with moss floating on the top- Oh, it’s not such a bad deal, except when loneliness catches you chilled in the middle of a sentence by yourself- ticking away like an old grandfather...

I turned 38 last week. I believe I handled it well. To celebrate, I went for a walk by the Bay and marveled at the beauty of the mountains, the sea gulls in the sky, how the sky was so blue. I sat for a while and pushed a strand of my hair back. It was white. I smiled then looked at the choppy...

It's official: I'm a crone. I don't mean the gnarled figure you see flying around on a broomstick at Halloween. I refer to the last of the three phases of the female principle in the ancient/pagan life cycle: the maiden (innocence), the madonna (fertility) and the crone (wisdom). The...
