The December wedding and reception took place in a beautiful old house at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, in the state of Washington. Most of the family and guests were coming from the Portland, Oregon area, and the only way across the Columbia River was the I-5 or the 205. ...

Moving into my new digs I found ancient pictures of both my nieces on Santa’s knee.  What must it be like to believe in Santa? Never did I think at 75 I’d be asking Santa for anything. My forty one year marriage ended  when my husband phoned to say he wasn’t coming home but planned to...

Possibly so. When my daughter Pam was in high school, her best friend Julie cared for a four-year-old girl who was totally deaf. They communicated through signing, drawing and playing games. Christmas came, and Rachel, the four-year-old, begged to go see Santa. Obligingly, Pam and Julie got her...

"Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there." Impossible, I thought. How could anybody not stir knowing that Santa Claus and his...

Stories capture our imagination and fix themselves to us, imprint us with their power once and forever. My Santa, the first Christmas I touched the reality of his presence, the magic of that moment has never left me. I’ve had many chapters in my life. Much like a classic story. One chapter ended...

Back in 2004, some four thousand Father Christmases assembled in a small Welsh town for a fun-run designed to break the world record for the largest gathering of Santas. Run done, record broken, the jovial gents in red (mostly the older ones, according to one witness) retired to the local...

When I overheard my older child explain the non-existance of Santa to his younger brother, I knew that there was nothing more for me to add to the conversation. My all-knowing older child explained the fun of pretending to believe in the story of Santa...like all the other kids did. My sons'...

Ah, that annual trip to the mall to visit Santa – hoping the little one won’t scream on the big elf’s lap, or worst yet, refuse to go near him. I trundled seven-year-old Jonas and four-year-old Henry into line at the mall Santa. As little Henry was transfixed by the animated toys and...

My father told yarns. Big ones. Yarns about fish of impossible dimensions. Yarns about ghosts and leprechauns. If something was impossible, impractical, or downright strange, my father had a yarn for it. So it should have been no surprise to me that he would have a yarn or two to tell about Santa....
