Photo: Wikipedia page for "Spiderman."  From The Amazing Spider-Man #547 (March 2008); Art by Steve McNiven and Dexter Vines     A very cool entry about a missing house spider on Michael Seidel's blog amused me to no end, as I thought I was the only one with an odd connection to a...

I've written several times about a man from Osaka who sends me emails in a rarefied Japanese far beyond my comprehension. Here's a recent sample, which he wrote when Japan was still ablaze with autumn colors: 風雅に紅葉狩りと洒落込んでこその濡れ落ち葉なのですが、毎週末は映画館です。 風雅 (ふうが: elegance; refinement); 紅葉狩り (もみじがり: autumn...

I always think of November as an odd month, and not just because it is an odd month, being the 11th of the year. November feels heavy to me. Summer is a memory, there are no more refreshing swims outdoors, sweaters and jackets replace shorts and sandals, Halloween is over... We eat...

It's a perfect sort of blustery fall day.  Leaves wave and shudder, causing red and gold swirls. Herds of clouds trundle across the sky, darkening and lightening, splitting and re-grouping.  Brilliant sunshine breaks out and retreats.  Curtains of rain cause momentary scurrying,...

It’s National Novel Writing Month — NaNoWriMo — and I’m supposed to be writing my novel right now, even as falling leaves continue to blanket my front yard and sidewalk and my garden waits for me to mix compost into the beds and cover them with the aforementioned leaves. I’ve got 2,000 words to...

The darkness falls- leaves crunch under my feet, as the wind tosses them around the empty street. The moon begins its ascent, round and plump and tinged in orange, A Halloween pumpkin in the sky. Two cats yowl and moan and circle each other before lunging- twisting, biting and clawing as fur flies...

The seasons are moving quickly on us, as though, once decided, they want to get done.  The rest of nature doesn't seem as sure about what's going on. Lawns are still green.  The cherry tomato plants are still blossoming and we just 'harvested' a few strawberries from our little plant...

Broke out of work, out of the house, laughing silently to myself, ha ha ha, free, gathering sunshine with my face. Time for the writing day to begin. Not quite. This is the walk to the writing day.  Mental and emotional preparations, even rituals, must be observed. I'd not thought until today...
