I am posting two of the papers I wrote under my Phillips Foundation Fellowship in 1997-1998, on the topic of Hong Kong.  This is the first, titled "Hong Kong As a Model for a Free Society."  The upshot: The irony is this: That even five months after becoming a part of the largest...

The Sunday Chicago Tribune sported a full page article on gambling corruption in European soccer. Seems a few of the matches, between 600 to 800, were suspected targets for game-fixing. The article goes on to speculate a bit about whether corruption of the same sort exists in American sports....

I'm re-reading "Economic Calculation in the Socialist Commonwealth" for a short story I'm working on, and a couple of things strike me: 1.  As I'm reading it, I keep thinking that this translation just doesn't seem to be as good as the translation of "Human Action", which I remember as being...

November 6th, 2012: the day we vote on economy… the year of apocalyptic partisanship… the year of promises of new economy… I usually don’t mess with economics. The last time I spoke on the topic was when I re-phrased the all-too-familiar “It’s economy, stupid!” meme into “It’s psychology, stupid...

Friday Night Lights, by Buzz Bissinger image via gothamist.com Having previously read After Friday Night Lights, I felt compelled by Bissinger’s years-after revisiting of Permian High School’s might-have-been superstar, Boobie Miles, and Odessa, Texas’, obsession with high school football, to...

I like "the glass is half-FULL" -news as much as the next guy, but I do wonder a bit at the cheerfulness of the AP writer who penned the lead in the story about France today, noting that the French government just had a successful bond issue "paying" its "investors" negative interest... in...

If you cannot get your daily bread, is joining a convent the answer? What about the call of god as a spiritual experience? The recession seems to have hit the women hard in UK and reports say they are choosing to become nuns. Although the figures aren’t alarming, the reason for the choice...
