What a difference a year makes. When 60 Minutes reran their 2009 feature on Guiding Light back in July, it was all too clear that there would be no segment noting the end of As the World Turns. No need to warn friends to adjust their DVRs in case the men’s final runs over. No offer from a Y&R...

With Guiding Light's final episode looming at the end of this week, CBS News finally stepped up to the plate with extended stories on both "CBS Sunday Morning" and "60 Minutes." Even taking into account the formidable challenges posed by trying to do justice to GL's seventy-two...

In the movies that acted as my education the journalist were heroes, sleeves rolled up, typing with two fingers on a manual Royal typewriter. They smoked cigars, even the women reporters, they talked as they typed. People yelled, "hold the front page." These heroes ferreted out corruption...

Summoning his best Mr. Spock impersonation, President Obama stated yesterday that fear of a government-run healthcare system is simply "not logical". This, despite actual logical arguments against and concerns over said system. But let's not forget, once the Supreme Leader says something...

ain't bad as the Meat Loaf song went. ABC's been taking a lot of flak on the boards (and from me here) for their itchy trigger finger when it comes to canceling quirky, well-written, character-driven shows. This year's been so bad that some were referring to the network as Already Been Cancelled...

This morning I was writing when I noticed I received an e-mail. Taking a look at it, I noticed it was a forward e-mail. At first I thought oh geez, don’t be an e-mail where I have to forward it to ten friends and I’ll get lucky. No, it was Entertainment Weekly confirming a story...

Really, you do. In a 1972 New Yorker piece titled, "Afternoon Television: Unhappiness Enough and Time," Renata Adler noted that Guiding Light had been "one of the most watched programs in daytime television. No more. The Doctors was just a better-written, better-acted epic of despair...
