My daughter (5) and I have our own routine when we go into a book store (seek out the shelf where our books would go and make a space for the next one -- the Fenway Fiction books are under the editor, Adam Pacther's name, and there usually aren't too many of those in stock), but I like these steps...

With so much in bloom and the weather trying to let the sun out to warm us, my walking thoughts visited why I enjoy Ashland.   Ten things popped to mind. 1.  A creek runs through us.  Sometimes it gets carried away with its role as a waterway running through town. The...

Finally! A book of mine coming out. It's just what I wanted; a generous, writer-friendly contract from an indie publisher. It took two years to get it to publication time, but at least I didn't have to run the "who gives a shit?" agent gauntlet, and the editing was spare, equally writer-friendly....

Yesterday I was in Moe's, my favorite Berkeley book store.  I had struck out on the fourth, third and second floors, and was in the sub-street level first, when a woman who had been shelving books said, with a big smile, "Hi! Haven't seen you in a while." I had, so far as I knew, never seen...

Writing in and for the dominant - arguably - culture of the world (that be English speaking and reading) we might tend to forget about other cultures. Whereas in North America one can no longer use the (or, even, a) book store as a touchstone or a mile stone, in France things are different....

I get a daily update on the state of the book publishing biz from "Galleycat" and quite often they include book sale figures. The news on that front is always depressing.  I think a story from yesterday's news feed indicated that mass market paperback sales are down nearly 41% from a year ago...

My wife and I, through the years, have established situational rules of behavior, guidane for how we will act. One, silly enough, when you are shopping, and you see something, and the price is reasonable, you buy it. Yet, it's a silly rule, but these silly rules are the culminations of experience....

The book shelves might not be groaning, but books themselves keep being written ... and read. I am not sure if there actually are fewer paper books, or if there are just fewer hard copies of each book. Readers are in a period of flux it is true, where one can chose to read off the page or off the...

Up in Eugene, I visited the Smith Family Book Store. Love book stores and enjoy this one. Smell the pages and feel the energy. Walking through the stacks without considering titles or sections, ideas slip into me of story ideas to explore, novels and stories to write. Going outside, I see the Post...
