http://blogs.forbes.com/susannahbreslin/ If you are a writer, you should be reading this woman's blog on Forbes.com. Her name is Susannah Breslin. She is on point and hysterical. She is doing a series now called "30 Days of Freelancing," but she also writes about jobs and the workplace in general....

I went to see the Broadway show, “Seminar.” http://seminaronbroadway.com/ In the play, four aspiring young novelists sign up for private writing classes ($5000 for 10 weeks) with Leonard (Alan Rickman), an international literary figure.  As someone who’s taken my share of writing classes...

Screenwriter Diablo Cody worked her magic with "Young Adult” as she did with “Juno.”  While others (reviewers and moviegoers) seem to be pre-occupied with the themes of 1) people for whom high school was their glory days; 2) being a homewrecker; 3) you can’t go home again; I got wrapped up in...

"Thaw made me feel as though there are others just as broken as me, maybe many others, and that gave me hope and comfort even as it made me cry."Nicole from Books and Bards I write for many reasons. I write because my characters turn up in my head and ask me to write their story. I write...

What does it mean to be a writer? Selima Hill, an English poet who writes marvellous and crazy poems, once said to me that poems are simply a by-product of being a poet. I love that image. They are like glittering sloughed-off skins, they are a result of a particular way of living in the world....

This week the LitChat topic on Twitter has been creative battlegrounds. What is meant by that, I learned after asking, is all those things that get in the way of putting word on the page. Being the contrarian that I am, I said that I see no creative battlegrounds for me, only creative opportunites...

I wrote the poem at the bottom of this post many years ago. I wanted to speak about the delicious juicy more-ish buzz I felt when this friend was reading my work. I wanted more! It reminds me of my younger brother at the swimming pool when we were little. He'd say 'look at me! look at me!' over and...

I went shopping for books yesterday. I had an hour between clients. I fancied a browse. After half an hour I picked up a book I'd never heard of, 'When You're Falling, Dive'. Then I happened upon a book I'd heard of online - I've 'met' the author, and it had appealed to me. It was the last copy and...

"A bit disappointing. The story ambled along for ages, giving no indication of where it was going, with lots of rather pointless looks at the main character's youth. There's also the mysterious letters that have no purpose in the story until the very end, when the reason for them is revealed...
