Photo: The Rose Main Reading Room of the New York Public Library, Manhattan I realized recently that I have a book-hoarding problem.  You know, like those people on the show Hoarders, who have psychotic breaks when a professional therapist, visiting the squalid house, tells them that...

The Raspberry Plastic Soaker Tub in the Chainsaw House          Except for back in 1971 in grad student days when I had a claw-foot tub in a bathroom with termites and dry rot in the floor, I don’t remember any of my bathtubs. I was glad just to move out before I dropped through to the basement....

Our project continues...that is, our renovation of our new (old) house.  We are over halfway done having basically finished the upstairs bedrooms, the livingroom, and the kitchen.  The countertop in the kitchen was installed on Monday, by the way.  It is  a granite/marble composite that picks up...

I work in an office with about thirty other people at HarperOne (a platoon of HarperCollins, a company of NewsCorp, a battalion of Rupert Murdoch Media-Growth Opportunities Unlimited, a regiment of China, Inc.). In the course of a month, I enter every room and cube in our office. I am not always...

An Open Letter to Men Who Don't Wash Their Hands in the Public Bathroom By Mark Budman I know this is nothing compared to a roadside bomb, campus shootings or the health care fiasco, but why don't you stop for thirty lousy seconds to wet your hands with water? Perhaps you are hungry for some finger...
