Most writers don't seem to want to explore the world of blogging. They see it as just one more thing to do. The don't realize that blogging affords them a superb way to promote themselves and their work--and to land a traditional publishing deal. A large number of bloggers are, indeed, getting...

If like me, you can't always make it to these panel discussions on how to get published, you might appreciate, as I do, when someone video tapes one so you can watch it from the comfort of your Lazy Boy or in my case, the Raymour & Flannigan sectional. This one is quite informative about...

In five days, Nanowrimo starts. For those who are not writers and even for some who are, you might be scratching your head and be saying Nano what? Nanowrimo. Nanowrimo is for writers, those who want to write, those who have played with the idea of writing, and those who don't know if...

Am I ever glad that self-publishing wasn't easy back in 2005, when I was writing my first novel, "The Jewel of Medina." Why? Because of that elephant in the room: the aspect of self-publishing that no one talks about. You can read about it here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/red-room/sherry-...

I'm recovering from a packed ten days, first at the Cork International Short Story Festival and then this past weekend at the Small Wonder short story festival. Both were wonderful, but the reason I decided to treat myself and go to both is rather less wonderful. I've been feeling depressed...

I wrote to at least sixty literary agents, trying to get representation for my new novel, SAVING JANE AUSTEN. Even with my entensive publishing record, it has proved difficult. However, at last an agent has agreed to take me on, sign a contract, and submit the book to several editors at good...

This essay is particularly relevant to me, in that there are genre elements in what I write, although when you view a complete work of mine, you don't see a mystery, or a thriller, or a clean-cut accounting of history. I think neither of Kim Wright's propositions are completely true; most of us...

It’s tempting, I know. When you’re ready to query, you just want to get your stuff out there. It’s almost like heading to the lake on a hot summer day. You KNOW the water is going to be cold, so you close your eyes and run for it – straight into the freezing water. Yeah, not always a smart move....

What with the writing world being turned upside down - even to the point of some agents recommending to clients to self-publish (yes, all self-pub proceeds are then subject to an agent's cut), it's hard to get noticed. (Hardly a shocking revelation, is it?) Even with a mid-list publishing contract...
