In the spirit of working it, writing-wise, I've been spending my time developing three new online workshops for the spring and summer months, while not busy giving mini workshops on my 2009 book tour -- Unlike other travelers, I like spending time in airports. I love people-watching, and people in...

A few days ago I completed the first draft of what, should life operate according to plan (which of course it never does), my seventh novel. As with most books that I finish, it came without fanfare or celebration, and of course I immediately began revising from the first page onwards. But this isn...

I had an email from an author friend today about my blog in which I have been talking about the links between creativity and depression. In it she said that 'everything is useful to a writer'. Is this true? For me, certainly it is. Yesterday I found an old guidebook to Venice, and within its pages...

I bought a new toaster oven recently when my old one stopped turning off by itself. The new one looked similar to the old one, but the rack for the toast was terrible, incredibly difficult to get in or out, rattling the entire toaster every time I opened the door. Who could design such a flawed...

When I was in college, I found myself sitting in the grove of trees by the classroom building with a friend.  We'd just left our class on Ibsen, Strindberg, and Mann, and we weren't very happy.  How could we have been?  In Ibsen's Ghosts, Oswald was just crying out for "the sun," and so...
