Grant Hayter-Menzies

Biography Before turning to biography full time, Grant Hayter-Menzies served as art and music critic for newspapers and magazines in the U.S. and Canada. His first book, a life of stage and screen comedienne Charlotte Greenwood, was published in 2007 by McFarland & Company; his second, the first biography of Chinese American author and personality Princess Der Ling, was published by Hong Kong University Press in 2008.  His most recent book, the first biography of actress and "Wizard of Oz" icon Billie Burke, was published in spring 2009. His current book project deals with the extraordinary friendship of American diplomatic wife Sarah Pike Conger and the Empress Dowager Cixi of China, before, during and after one of the greatest cataclysms of East/West relations, the 1900 Boxer Uprising.

  • "The Empress and Mrs. Conger: The Uncommon Bond of Two Women and Two Worlds" - a look at the friendship of American diplomatic wife Sarah Conger and the Empress Dowager Cixi, before, during and after the greatest cataclysm of East-West relations, the 1900 Boxer Uprising. (Publication scheduled for 2011-2012)
